Fifty years of creative photography.

Welcome to my vision

I am on a lifelong journey of creative photography.

As a former student of Minor White, himself a student of Ansel Adams, I constantly seek images that are thought provoking and invite prolonged exploration.

Presented for your enjoyment!

Images that invite imagination

My personal goal is to go beyond the typical -- you won't find many "conventional" shots here;  I leave that to other fine photographers of which there are many.  I prefer images that encourage entry and personalization, evoke emotions and allow the viewer to imagine stories and characters within.  I am particularly drawn to Images that suggest a hidden presence, one that your own mind fills in.

My Evolution

My work has evolved over the decades, with a constant goal of developing and refining my voice.  If you find anything of interest, I welcome feedback and look forward to sharing with you.

My photo books, presented on Shutterfly

The photo books shown here may be viewed online for free.  You may also purchase copies from Shutterfly, although I suggest you wait until they are offering "Unlimited Free Pages" to keep the cost down.  This offer happens a few times each year.  I do not earn anything from this, it's just a means to share.

Light Work

Snippets of Cambridge and Wales

Snippets of Cambridge and Wales

Light is often playful, calming and inspiring. This small collection is an exploration of light interacting with the world, giving us gifts that are often short lived.

In July of 2025 we ventured to Great Britain, ranging from Cambridge to Swansea and points West.  This collection of images is a brief vignette of that experience.

Unreal

Unreal

Actual or virtual.  Does it really matter?

This collection is unapologetically ersatz; it's the product of melding and morphing the real into something else.

Quiet

In Visible

Unreal

We live in a noisy, rushed time.

This collection of images is the polar opposite -- slow-burn.

If you're in a hurry, come back later.

Artifice

In Visible

In Visible

Artifice is defined as "the clever use of tricks and devices."

The images in this collection are the result of a variety of unconventional methods and tools.  They all start as original photos.

In this collection I start to explore other visual realms, including infrared photography.

Texture is the background of our visual landscape.  Easy to ignore, wonderful to explore.

Beauty of the Ordinary

There is visual beauty all around us.  In this collection I explore images that are both easy to see and easy to miss.

Rhythm and Discord

Beauty of the Ordinary

Rhythm is easy to find -- man-made, natural, happenstance.  When balanced against discord, the dance begins.

The photographer is a hunter, a selector and a conduit. These images are from a broad time-frame, sharing my early evolution in image creation.

A bit of history

Early years at MIT

As an architecture major in the early 1970s, I had the unique opportunity to  enjoy the mentorship of Minor White, a superb and inspirational photographer.  Under his gentle guidance, along with other students I learned how to quiet the internal noise and allow the world to speak through images.  That was the beginning  of my journey, one that continues to this day.

The more things change...

After a lifetime of engineering and teaching, I returned a decade or so  ago to reignite my passion for making images.  In the interim there has been amazing progress in the tools and methods, a steep learning curve to be sure.  The good news is that my basic instincts and "eyes" have remained intact, allowing me to pick up where I left off.  And with renewed passion.

Developing my personal voice

Throughout, I continue to seek my own personal style-- excited by others, but mainly by my inner voice.  I'm attracted as before to the unusual -- ambiguous scale, incongruous combinations and exciting textures.  I'm not done yet!
